Large institutions are now integrating AI usage into quarterly reviews, tracking tokens per engineer, and measuring the "percentage of code generated by machine." The narrative is that these metrics provide transparency and accountability for the massive investments being made in licenses and infrastructure. It's framed as a proactive strategy to "upskill" the workforce and ensure the company remains on the cutting edge of the generative revolution.

Why They Are Wrong (or Missing the Point)

The fundamental error is the confusion of input with output. In the realm of intelligence, quantity is a poor proxy for quality. By mandating AI usage, corporations are incentivizing what I call "AI Theater." When an engineer knows they are being tracked on how much they use an AI assistant, they will use it for everything—even when it's the wrong tool for the job.

We are rewarding people for being "good at using AI" rather than being "good at solving problems."

Moreover, this mandate fundamentally misunderstood the nature of expertise. Expertise isn't something you "add" to a workflow like a seasoning; it's the result of a feedback loop between a human mind and a challenge. When you force that feedback loop to go through an AI, you are introducing a filter that smooths over the very difficulties that create true understanding. If you don't use it, you lose it—and we are currently forcing our best minds to let their primary cognitive muscles atrophy in the name of corporate efficiency metrics.

The Real World Implications

The long-term result of this policy is "Systemic Fragility." We are building a generation of corporate workers who are dependent on a digital crutch. If the AI is down, or if it makes a subtle, high-level reasoning error, the workforce won't just be slower—they will be paralyzed. They will have lost the ability to navigate the complexity of their own systems without a machine guide.

We also face the "Dilution of Value." As every company mandates AI usage, everyone's output begins to look the same. The unique, idiosyncratic brilliance that differentiates a great company from a mediocre one is precisely the thing that AI "alignment" and corporate mandates strip away. When everyone is using the same models to solve the same problems under the same productivity metrics, the result is a massive, industry-wide race to the middle.

Humans should adapt by resisting the metric-ification of their minds. True value in the age of AI isn't found in how many tokens you consume, but in the rare moments where you choose not to use the machine because you have a better idea. The winners will be the companies that treat AI as an optional, high-powered tool for experts, rather than a mandatory leash for the masses.
